Bay Windows – Ways to Install Curtains

Bay Windows

Bay windows are a gorgeous addition to any home or living space.  They are larger in size and are unique in the way they are created in a projected space outside the main walls of the room.  Additionally, the extra space that becomes available infront of the window makes for a really cozy nook for sitting, reading, or even a eat-in area.

Since bay windows are typically very large, they can let in a lot of sunlight.  You’ll need the option of creating some shade or simply to get some privacy from the outside if needed.  Installing curtains is a good idea for this and it would beautifully accent your cozy nook area.  This task can be a bit tricky but with the right tips and ideas, it certainly is possible.

Better Look

For a clean and modern look, you’ll want symmetry in the way the curtains will frame each window, giving the appearance as if the curtains bend with the design of the window.  With this method, you probably won’t find a rod that is perfectly bend into shape and size.  Instead, install separate curtain rods that fit to the size of each individual window. For example, if the bay window has three windows, you’ll need three separate curtain rods.   This design will look best with four panels: one panel on each end and one panel on either side on of the centre window. Curtains hung on rings work best with this design for easy sliding.

If you want a more simple look and you only want to use two panels, it would still adhere to the idea of symmetry however, two panels wouldn’t be enough to completely shade the window. With this method, the two panel design would be more for decorative purposes only and you wouldn’t plan on opening and closing the curtains.

If long and draping curtains are not your style, you could opt for window shades that can be drawn down the window to create shade.  With this design, again you could install separate shades that fit to each window individually.  You wouldn’t need to worry about the best ways to attach curtains or how many you’ll need.  Moreover, window shades are also a very sleek and appear to take up less space. This idea would work best for less cozy areas like the kitchen eat-in area.
